What do the Outdoor Learning courses entail?

Level 1 Award in Outdoor Learning

Who is this level 1 course for?

This course is suitable for anyone who want explore the benefits of Outdoor Learning for young people in schools. We recommend it is delivered to whole staff teams(including governors) to raise levels of awareness, confidence and support.

What is covered in the course?

By the end of the course learners will have an understanding of the three key elements of Outdoor Learning: 

      1Learning, play and development in the outdoors. Learners will:

  • know about outdoor learning and play, (this includes Forest school)

  • Be able to participate in outdoor learning,

  • Know about the impact of outdoor learning and play on the natural environment and

  • Know how to identify hazards in outdoor learning and play environments.

       2.  Health and Safety for Working Outdoors. Learners will:

  • Know the potential hazards when working outdoors and how they can be avoided,

  • Understand health and safety arrangements for working outdoors and

  • Be able to comply with all rules and regulations of the work area when working outdoors.

       3.  Outdoor Practical Skills. Learners will:

  • Know the hazards in an outdoor setting,

  • Know how the use of outdoors can impact on the environment,

  • Be able to use hand tools in an outdoor setting,

  • Be able to construct items from outdoor materials and

  • Be able to create a campfire.

                                   

How much will this cost?

£200 for individuals. Significant discounts will be given to groups of individuals booking together (please ask for details)

What are the entry requirements?

You need to be at least 14 years old.

No previous experience is required but enthusiasm and a sense of humour would really help.

Where is the training?

For a group from the same setting training would take place on your site or the area you in tend to work in. For groups of individuals training would take place at Otterhead and examples used from your sites.

 

 

Level 2 Award in Outdoor Learning Practice

Who is this course for?

This course is designed for people who will actually be delivering the outdoor learning sessions  

to students.  For anyone who is leading a session outside, this course is invaluable. Having staff  

trained in each of the different year groups would also be of great benefit. 

What is covered in the course?

The three units that make up this award are outlined below. 

1. Supporting Learning, Play and Development in the outdoors.  Learners will:

  • Understand how outdoor learning and play can support an individual’s development.

  • Know how a range of experiences can support learning, play and development.

 2. Outdoor Learning Practitioner. Learners will:

  • Be able to participate in outdoor learning activities.

  • Understand the learning opportunities available in outdoor learning.

  • Understand risk/benefit analysis for outdoor learning.

  • Be able to deliver outdoor learning.

  • Be able to reflect on outdoor learning.

3. Sustainable Use of Natural Resources.  Learners will:

  • Understand the ecology of a natural learning environment.

  • Understand sustainable use of natural resources.

 

Learners can bolt on a forth unit:

4. Outdoor Practical Skills which enables them to carry out a range of outdoor practical tasks appropriate to outdoor learning. For example: learners would become proficient using and maintaining a range of hand tools, tying knots, putting up shelters, lighting campfires and making items using natural materials.

How much will this cost?

The OLP course is £250 and takes two and a half days (the half day usually takes the form of a twilight session.)

Adding on the Outdoor Practical skills turns this into a four and a half day course  and costs £450

What are the entry requirements?

You need to be at least 16 years old .  You need to have a reasonable level of Literacy to be able to access the written element of this course.  Please ask for details if you are unsure. A good sense of humour and an interest in working with young people is important.

Where is the training?

When possible training would take place in your grounds although with a mixed group it may be necessary to use Otterhead. Learners would need to use examples from their own grounds and therefore photo graphs and plans/maps would be required.

 

 

Level 3 Award in Coordinating an Outdoor Curriculum

Who is this course for?

Anyone who wants to coordinate the outdoor Learning programme in their own setting.

Completion of the Level 2 Outdoor Learning Practitioner is a prerequisite for the course.  It is advisable to train two people from each establishment.

What is covered in the course?

1. Supporting Learning, Play and Development in the Outdoors. Learners will:

  • Explain the factors affecting the behaviour of learners in the outdoors,

  • Understand how behaviour impacts on play, learning and development and

  • Understand how outdoor learning can support learning, play and development.

2. Observation and Evaluation of Outdoor Learning. Learners will:

  • Be able to evaluate a programme of outdoor learning and

  • Understand the role of the leader of outdoor learning programmes

3. Sustainable use of Natural Resources. Learners will:

  • Understand ecosystems and

  • Understand the sustainable management of natural resources.

4. Outdoor Curriculum co-ordinator. Learners will:

  • Understand how to implement sustainable use of natural learning resources,

  • Be able to co-ordinate the provision of outdoor learning,

  • Understand the benefits of delivering outdoor learning and

  • Be able to reflect on development of an outdoor learning provision.

 

How much will this cost?

This is a two day and a half day course, which costs £250.  The half day will take the form of a twilight session.

What are the entry requirements?

Learners need to be at least 19 years old.

You need to have a good level of Literacy to be able to access the written element of this course. 

A good sense of humour and knowledge of the appropriate school curriculum.

 **Level 2 Award in Outdoor Learning Practitioner is a pre-requisite for this course.**

Where is the training?

Training will take place at Otterhead unless all students are from one establishment.
