From September 2020 we will be running a 19 Credit Level 3 Forest School Leaders qualification, which is in line with the Forest School Association. This means you will get to spend an extra day in the woods with us.  However, due to increased costs, we have had to raise our price for this course to £890.  

All of the full face to face courses for 2020 have been POSTPONED due to COVID 19.

Information on our courses below:

Otterhead Forest School has been offering bespoke Forest School training for over seven years. We have catered for groups of individuals as well as education establishments wishing to implement Forest School as part of their curriculum. Our training aims to facilitate front line education professionals to offer a more varied and engaging curriculum.

 

We offer our clients the unique opportunity to experience an established Forest School, use our facilities and work with students who attend Otterhead Forest School.


We have recently changed our awarding body to Argoed Cymru  as we wanted to introduce Outdoor Learning Courses. (see Outdoor Learning Training).

 

We currently offer :

  •        Level 2 Award In Assisting Forest School £465

  •        Level 3 Certificate in Leading Forest School £890

( see below for more info.)

 

We have also been asked to provide support and consultancy with regards to developing school sites so they are appropriate for delivering Forest School activities. This support has included health and safety, curriculum and activity advice as well as providing bespoke fire pits and seating areas.

Level 3     (Certificate)    'Leading Forest School' 19 Credits

Who is the Level 3 course for?                                                                                              If you want to lead the Forest School your own Educational establishment  or run sessions independently then this certificate would be the most appropriate for you.

What is covered in the course?  

There are five units within this course 

1.  Forest School Leader. Learners will:

  • Understand the development of Forest School.

  • Be able to develop the required documents to deliver Forest School programmes.

  • Be able to deliver Forest School sessions.

  • Be able to reflect on personal training.

2.  Supporting Learning Development and Play in the Outdoors. Learners will:

  • Understand theories of learning.

  • Understand theories and value of play.

  • Understand how behaviour impacts on learning, play and holistic development.

  • Understand how learning and play in the natural environment can support holistic development.

3.Observation and Evaluation of Outdoor Learning. Learner will:

  • Be able to evaluate a programme of outdoor learning.

  • Understand the role of the Forest School leader.

4.Sustainable Use of Natural Resources. Learners will:

  • Understand ecosystems.

  • Understand the sustainable management of natural resources.

5.Teaching Outdoor Practical Skills. Learners will:

  • Be able to teach a range of outdoor practical skills.

  • Be able to teach campfire management.

How much will this cost?

How much time do you need to commit to attending days?

6 day intensive theory and practical learning and 2 or 3 day practical skills assessment ( depending on the size of the group). You will need to attend a tutorial, run 6 Forest School sessions and be observed during these sessions.  You will also need to complete a portfolio of evidence.  In total this will take about a year to complete.

What are the entry requirements?

Learners need to be at least 19 years old.  You need to have a good level of Literacy to be able to access the written element of this course.  A good sense of humour and an interest in working with young people is important.

What else do you need to know? 

As part of the portfolio of work you are required to plan and run  six Forest School sessions.  If you do not have an establishment to run your sessions in we can provide help in finding somewhere.

Throughout  the training you will see Forest School in action and interact with our students whenever possible. 

You will need to acquire a 16 hours Paediatric/Forest School First Aid certificate appropriate to Forest School in order to be able to use your Level 3 qualification.  Help can be giving on finding a suitable course.

You will also need to have an up to date DBS certificate (formerly CRB).                                                                            

Level 2   (Award)    'In Assisting Forest School'

Who is the level 2 course for?                                                                                                If you want to work as part of a Forest School assisting and supporting, this course would be appropriate for you.

What is covered in this course?     

There are 4 units:

1.  Supporting Learning, Play and Development in the Natural Environment. Learners will:

  • Understand outdoor learning and play in the natural environment.

  • Understand how outdoor learning in the natural environment supports holistic development.

  • Understand how outdoor learning in the natural environment can support learning and development.

2.  Sustainable Use and Management of Natural Resources. Learners will:

  • Understand ecosystems.

  • Understand the sustainable use and management of natural resources.

3.  Outdoor Practical Skills. Learners will:

  • Be able to carry out a range of outdoor practical tasks.

  • Be able to manage a campfire.

4.  Assist at Forest School. Learners will:

  • Understand how to assist at Forest School.

  • Be able to reflect on assisting at Forest School.

  • Understand risk/benefit analysis at Forest School.

How much will this cost?                                                                                                       £465

How much time do you need to commit?    

  • 5 days learning practical skills and the theory behind Forest School

  • You will be required to completed the portfolio in your own time.

  • 3 half day sessions at Otterhead Forest School when you will be observing Forest School in action and

  • 3 half day sessions when you will be assisting with a group of our students alongside an experienced Forest School leader. This will be arranged after your initial training.

What are the entry requirements?                                                                                      You need to be at least 16 years old .  You need to have a reasonable level of Literacy to be able to access the written element of this course.  Please ask for details if you are unsure. A good sense of humour and an interest in working with young people is important.

What else do you need to know?

As part of the portfolio of work you need to complete, you are required to plan and assist in the running of three Forest School sessions.  On our course you will complete this within our Forest School and you will therefore be involve in real Forest School sessions with our students who will be chosen to meet your particular needs.

Throughout  the training you will see Forest School in action and interact with our students whenever possible.
