At Otterhead Forest School, we teach people to use natural materials from the forest to build shelters and camping areas. Camps are important as they contribute towards making people feel safe in the forest and provide groups and individuals with a recognisable and stable place in which to take pride and responsibility.
Camps provide a inspiring, safe place to develop tool skills, social interaction and all aspects of bush craft. Shelter building presents opportunities for students to link bush craft with maths, science and geography for example working with angles to ensure a strong shelter design. Using woodland resources also encourages strong connections with nature and the local environment.
